Need Based Grants
Grants Dept.
Grants that are based on the students' financial needs are simply called Need based grants. A lot of people need assistance in pursuing their college education, but there are still a number of students whose families are in extremely low-income that they cannot even afford a semester in college. This is where the need based grants are very useful for these students especially if they are in the college age bracket already. The grants funded by the federal government are the most common need based grants. There are a number of federal grants. The most popular is the Federal Pell Grant. The family income ceiling for this grant is $40,000. This would mean that families that earn this amount or below per year are qualified to receive money from the Pell Grant. This can immensely support their children's education. There is also the Supplemental Education Grant. It includes work study programs that is also covered by the federal grant. Need-based grants do not use grades as a basis to award the grant money. This is actually advantageous for most families whose aim is to simply pursue a college education. There is definitely no need to maintain a high grade point average throughout one's college years. Need-based grants are still available to students even if they are struggling with their education. Keep in mind that it has nothing to do with merits. It is purely based on one's financial difficulty. Most of these grants require a certain GPA throughout college. An example is maintaining a B- or a C average which is attainable by most recipients.
One must understand that as his or her income increases, your need-based grant will be voided. Also, one is required to be enrolled full-time in order to receive the grant money. These are the major considerations that one must always remember. Other than these two, then once you finish your education, you are not required to pay the grant money that was awarded to you. One must fill out the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The FAFSA serves as your application form and will be assessed to determine one's eligibility in receiving a grant. It must be filed by the first week of March if one is planning to attend his classes by fall. You will receive a student award letter if you are qualified for the financial aid. Once you start attending your classes, you will also start receiving your grant money. The money will be deposited directly to one's account at the preferred school. In this manner, it will be very convenient for both parties.
