Grants Dept.

From the Office of Administration

Students who are looking for grants to pursue their education have more chances of getting scholarships and school grants. This is due to the high need of having more people who have higher education. Graduate students do not have these opportunities that can help them pursue research within their chosen field. This is the main reason why graduate students need to do a lot of research to be able find sources of research grants. The most common source of research grants are through private organizations. One private organization that provides research grants for graduate degree programs is the Geological Society of America. This helps them promote research in geology. Geological Society of America (GSA) grant is only for graduate students who are seeking advanced degrees in geology. Usually half of the applicants are approved for funding through the GSA grant. Keep in mind that this grant is only applicable to GSA members. The good thing about this grant is that it is open to non-Americans and Americans. Also, the applicants must be currently enrolled in a university or college in the US, Mexico, Central America and Canada. Applicants must have or is already pursuing a degree in earth science. Something that has a geologic element that will help qualify for the GSA grant.

The grant can be availed twice by a student. First, as a Master's degree level and the second one on a doctorate degree. The grant money for approved students varies. The maximum grant money per student is $4,000. The money given will cover expenses that will help complete a student's research. It is very important that the applicant honestly fills out the information regarding the details of his or her research. This will provide proportionate grant money to a student's research. Interested students who want to apply for such grants must submit his or her research proposal indicating the coverage of the research as they pursue their degrees at the same time. It is the college grant application review board that will decide who are the deserving to receive the grant. Like what was mentioned earlier, the money will cover all pertinent expenses that will help the student finish his or her research. These expenses include the following: cost of housing, university research equipment, travel, supplies and customized equipment that will help accomplish the project. Remember that the grant money cannot be used for standard research equipment nor for tuition fees. An electronic progress report form will be issued the year after the money was awarded to the student. This is how the GSA will be appraised about the students' researches.
